Physical Specs and Compatibility
The Radius PrecisionColor 8-XJ card is either a 7" or 12" NuBus card (there were two versions) compatible with 680x0- and PowerPC-based Macs running up to Mac OS 8.1. It may be compatible with higher versions of the Mac OS but no information for Mac OS 8.5-8.6 is available at this time, and it's doubtful that the card is compatible with Mac OS 9.
Acceleration/Resolution/Color Support
The card provides standard QuickDraw acceleration and supports the following resolutions in up to 8-bit color:
- 512 x 384
- 640 x 480 @ 66.7 Hz or 60 Hz
- 800 x 600 @ 75 Hz
- 832 x 624
- 1024 x 768 @ 60 Hz, 65 Hz, and 75 Hz
- 1152 x 870
- 1152 x 882
Other Notes
- ROM v2.0 or higher is PPC-compatible; older versions may not be.
- Probably the most versatile NuBus video card that is still relatively easy to find on eBay, where you can usually get one for under US$15. If you have a 20" or smaller monitor that you can't drive with anything else, this card will probably drive it.
- This card supports NuBus block transfer, providing an added boost if used in a Quadra 840AV. This will probably also speed up the Apple 4ï8, 8•24, or 8•24GC cards in the same computer.
- QuickColor 3.3 (part of RadiusWare 3.3) works fine under any Mac OS up to and including Mac OS 9.1.
- Dynamic Desktop crashes the Mac OS at startup when installed on Mac OS 8.6 or higher. SwitchRes (shareware) works to change resolutions instead.
