iPods Need to Be Disconnected Safely

A new Apple Knowledge Base article says:

"When iPod is connected to a computer there are times when it should not be disconnected by simply unplugging the USB cable. In these cases, iPod must first be ejected before it can be safely disconnected. Read the information in this article to determine when an iPod can be safely disconnected.

"iPod can be safely disconnected by simply unplugging the cable if the iPod display shows any of the following screens:

• 'Charging'
• 'Ok to disconnect'
• The iPod main menu with the Music, Settings, and Extras selections in addition to others
• iPod shuffle displays a solid amber or solid green LED

"iPod must be ejected first before disconnecting if any of the following screens are displayed on the iPod:

• 'Do not disconnect'
• 'Connected, Eject Before Disconnecting'
• 'Sync in Progress, Please Wait...'
• iPod shuffle displays a blinking amber LED

"If the 'Enable disk use' or 'Manually manage music and videos' options are enabled for iPod in iTunes, iPod will need to be manually ejected before disconnecting the cable

"To eject iPod:

1. Select your iPod in the iTunes Source list.
2. Click the eject icon next to the iPod in the Source list or choose Eject iPod from the Controls menu.
3. Additional ways to eject iPod

"You can also eject iPod by using a keyboard shortcut (Command-E)—but only if the iPod is selected in the iTunes Source List.

"If the iPod display still shows a screen indicating that it should not be disconnected as explained above, use the method below to eject iPod.

"Mac

1. Click the Finder icon in the <U>Dock</U>.
2. Select the iPod icon.
3. From the File menu, choose Eject iPod (Command-E).

"Windows

1. Double-click My Computer (Windows XP and Windows 2000) or, on the Start menu, click Computer (Windows Vista).
2. Right-click the iPod icon.
3. Choose Eject from the shortcut menu."

How to Extract DVD Audio for iPod shuffle on Your Mac

iskysoft.com has posted a tutorial on how you can extract audio or segments of movies you like, from a DVD and put it on your iPod shuffle, noting that iTunes can import CDs to iTunes but not DVDs, so you need a third party app to extract audio from DVD and convert it to iPod shuffle format like MP3.

As Smart Phones Boom, Cancer Study Starts

The Street's Carmen Nobel reports:

"Rats may get tumors, and cell-phone companies may feel their pain.

"US Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) will act as chairman of a hearing today called 'The Health Effects of Cell Phone Use' in a meeting of the Senate Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services. The discussion comes as Americans' use of cell phones increased 50% last year, driven by smart phones, including Apple's iPhone, Research in Motion's BlackBerry and Palm's Treo and Pre."

iPhone 3.1.1 Bug with iPod Functionality

Macgasm.net Joshua Schnell says:

"We've stumbled across a pretty annoying bug that's surfaced with the iPhone/Touch 3.1 update. Essentially the iTunes mini-player that was available previously by double clicking the 'home' button has fallen apart.

"We've done some research and found a number of users are having the same issue."

Zune HD Teardown

iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens says:

"Following up on our slew of iPod teardowns last week, we've just finished taking apart the new kid on the block: the Zune HD. Microsoft has taken a long time to get to market with this device, and the hardware shows it. It's lighter than the iPod touch, smaller in two dimensions (skinnier and shorter, but 0.4 mm thicker), claims better battery life with a smaller battery, and beat Apple to market with an OLED screen.

"We were very curious how Microsoft's new music player stacks up with the updated iPod touch, so we decided to take it apart!

"Highlights:

• The Zune has a Samsung-manufactured 3.3 inch OLED display. This part is likely the most expensive item on the Zune's bill of materials, and contributes to the improved battery life.
• The OLED screen is incredibly thin (1 mm) and seems more rugged than a traditional LCD panel.
• We can confirm that the Zune HD does NOT have 802.11n support. Instead, it's got a super efficient Atheros AR6002GZ 802.11g chip: http://www.atheros.com/pt/bulletins/AR6002Bulletin.pdf
• The Zune has an nVidia Tegra 2600 processor, supporting OpenGL ES 2.0 and programmable pixel shaders. In a stark contrast to Apple's relationship with Samsung, nVidia's product page (http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_tegra_apx_us.html) actually has a link to buy the Zune HD.
• The battery capacity is 660 mAh. That's about 16% less than the 789 mAh battery in the new iPod touch. However, Microsoft promises a longer run time than the touch for both music and videos. They may have pulled it off - Microsoft certainly had a lot of motivation to push for super low-power hardware solutions in this device.
• Toshiba supplied the NAND flash in our unit, and Hynix provided the SDRAM. However, we've had reports that Microsoft is using a few different suppliers for these parts. If you have specific questions about the Zune HD, let us know and we'll be happy to dig up the answers for you.
