Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" ships today, and the MacBook Air (MBA) is a perfect candidate for the $29 upgrade. The latest version of OS X only supports Intel Macs, and with other optimizations it uses a lot less drive space - a big factor on this little computer.

MacBook Air

Apple updated the MacBook Air in June.The newest MacBook Air now runs at 1.86 GHz and 2.13 GHz, up from 1.6 GHz and 1.83 GHz from the previous version. Due to price drops on SSDs, the 2.13 GHz SSD model has dropped to $1,799, and the entry level 1.86 GHz 120 GB hard drive MBA lists at $1,499.

The 3.0 lb. MacBook Air (MBA) is just 3/4" thick at the back end - and 1/6" thin on the front side. It still has 2 GB of built-in RAM (not expandable), and that's now coupled with a 120 GB hard drive or a 128 GB solid state drive (SSD). In addition, the MBA has GeForce 9400M graphics, a Mini Display Port, and supports resolutions to 2560 x 1600 on an external display.

Apple made a lot of compromises to make the MBA as thin and light as possible: it uses a 1.8" iPod hard drive, has no RAM sockets, doesn't include ethernet or FireWire ports, only has a single USB port, and uses integrated graphics. On the plus side, it has the same size screen and the same keyboard as the MacBook.
